Powell River at a Glance
Located in B.C.'s Sunshine Coast,
135 km (88 mi) northwest of Vancouver,
Powell River's coastal setting is high on its list of attributes. In addition
to its visual appeal, the city's coastline serves as one of Canada's best dive
spots, home to some of the largest octopi in the world and the Emerald
Princess, a legendary mermaid statue that lies 18 m (60 ft) below the surface.
The Giant
Hulks, a line of retired ships chained together, protect the marina from raging
waves and attract visitors armed with cameras. On land exists endless recreational
choices, including hiking, biking, golfing and fishing. On a rare rainy day, visitors
can take in a show at B.C.'s oldest cinema, the Patricia
Theatre, built in 1928. The
Blackberry Festival, a week long event celebrating the summer's yield of blackberries,
boasts festivities such as an open air market, art in the park and plenty of blackberry
delicacies. The whole thing wraps up with a street party of sorts.
